Monster Park. Where the San Francisco 49ers fans have left their hearts cheering for their championship teams over the years.
Built at Candlestick Point on the eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay in 1960, it was designed for baseball and was the first modern facility concrete-based stadium of its kind. Football was also played there in the early days but seating was not modified to accomodate the football field until the early 1970s.
The stadium is infamous for the wind and strong wind gusts that occur when coming off of the bay, causing chaos for baseball outfielders when the Giants played in Candlestick and for the quarterbacks and kickers alike when the 49ers play at home as the wind would affect many games.
Monster Stadium acquired the naming rights to the former Candlestick Park stadium in 2004, but will lose the rights to the named park once their contract expires. It was voted by the city to permanently have the name of Candlestick Park instead of allowing corporate sponsorship of the stadium.
The field has been renamed the Bill Walsh Field in honor and memory of their late coach, Bill Walsh, who led the 49ers to a dominance during the 80s that included three NFL Championships.
